How To Take Care Of Your New Rug

Rugs are often in the centre of a room or main walkway in a house and therefore experience a lot of wear are tear. There are many different factors that can affect how long a rug will last and how well it will age. Here are a few points to help you take care of your rug, whatever kind it may be.

• Conditions and general care- Keep your rug in dry conditions and avoid putting in dark rooms or areas that are not usually used (moth infestation). Make sure you vacuum your rug often to prevent infestation and remove any insect eggs which may have been laid already. Vaccum both sides and the floor underneath once in a while to ensure the entire area is clean. Oriental/Persian rugs-be careful if your vacuum cleaner has a brush as this may pull at the delicate fibres and prematurely wear your rug.

• Water damage- Avoid wetting, especially repeated wetting without the rug being aired sufficiently to dry. Don’t put live potted plants on a rug as the pot may leak. If an Oriental or Persian rug, look out for the material feeling stiffer to the touch-this means it may have been water damaged and it needs to be properly cleaned and dried.

• Don’t put down on damp floors- Directly on cement (naturally damp), newly washed hardwood or lino-style man made flooring.

• Attend stains immediately – If anything is liquid is spilt on your rug use a dry towel to soak it up then use a damp cloth to draw any excess out and dry immediately. Do not rub it as this will only spread the liquid and disturb the pile.

• Cleaning fluids- Keep harmful cleaning fluids and chemicals away from your rug. Chemicals in many cleaning fluids, household sprays and insecticides can damage the natural fibres of the rug and through time could cause discolouration and a weakening in the structure of the weave.

• Pets- Train pets and where possible keep them off rugs altogether. Pets such as cats and dogs can carry all manner of things in to the house on their paws which they spread where ever they go. It is hard to control what they may be contaminating your rug with so it’s best, if possible, to keep them off it altogether. Rugs with a longer pile may trap dirt and insects deep in the fibres which are hard to get out even when cleaning so address any pet-related dirt immediately.

• Keep out of sunlight- Sun damage affects the colour of the rug and will result in the pattern and colour looking uneven. Keep it out of direct sunlight is possible. If one area of the rug is in constant sunlight, turn it around every few months to ensure a more even wear. This is the same for rugs where one area will be used more than others. Perhaps some is under furniture and some is being walked over daily-turn it around to ensure an even wear in this instance.
