How To Visually Track Performance Of A Business – A Balanced Scorecard Overview

To visually track performance, whether for personal or organizational development, you need to have something concrete to review from time to time. That report should be composed of numbers, figures, statistics, charts and other quantified data in order for you to compare and evaluate whatever specific aspect you want. In business terminology, these paper-based reports are executed through the use of a balanced scorecard.

Balanced scorecards have earned its fame when trying to visually track performance of a certain organization. Strategic thinking, planning, tactic implementation, communication, feed back and vision – all of these are just some of the components that are engraved in every scorecard report. If you will ask how is it possible to visually track performance by using such methodology, just think of a BSC as an exhibit of different images that depicts yesterday, today and tomorrow.

One of the advantages of having a tool to visually track performance is being able to gauge a certain individual or organization’s capacity to evolve with time and conflict. Why? That is the point that a balanced scorecard is trying to exuberate. By making every individual’s performance watched as you help them into directing their focus for the central goal, the overall development of the company or organization will then be carried along with it. It is like how ants build an anthill – each and every ant have their own duties and responsibilities to achieve their main goal, which is having a huge pile of sand that extends downwards that has the capacity to accommodate an entire ant community. Do you know that in an ant colony, if there is a queen, there are also workers and executives? These “executives” are the ones that visually track performance of each and every ant, to ensure that duties are being fulfilled. As much as I want to say that they have balanced scorecards as well, you know very well that ant

The point of the matter is that, to visually track performance means being hands-on to the organization. Be aware though that the “performance” that we are talking about does not only apply to workers. This applies into different areas such as

1.Financial performance – To visually track performance in terms of financial activities of the organization, this is the aspect that is being reviewed and evaluated.

2.Internal Business Processes performance – What is being done in order to attain the central goal? What changes should be made? These are just some of the questions that this performance aspect answers.

3.Growth and Development - Do employees receive some sort of special trainings and workshops to maximize their productivity and increase their knowledge related to the business? Are their needs being met? By measuring the performance in this area, these queries can be cleared.

4.Customer Service – This pertains to the customers’ own evaluation of the business, what’s being done to ensure customer satisfaction, target markets and everything related to customer service and contentment.

If those four areas ring a bell to you, that is only because these are the four major perspectives in a balanced scorecard. These are also the four areas that are often gauged. To visually track performance of the entire organization, these four are the ones that are being evaluated through numbers and figures.
