How To Work At Home Successfully
For years I worked in Corporate America. But, then around 15 years ago I was able to start working out of my home. There were pluses and minuses and didn’t become really pleasurable and profitable until about two years ago, when I took a hard look at what I was doing and made some changes. At first the pluses for working at home were: I had more flexible hours. I just needed to get the work done, no one cared what time of the day or night that I got it done. I did not have to waste an hour or so in commute time. I saved on gas and the wear and tear on my car. For me, having windows and being able to see outside was a real plus. I enjoy nature and it was relaxing for me to be able to look out and see the flowers, the greenery and the blue skies. Most of the corporate offices where I had previously worked had very few windows and if we took a break and took a walk it was usually looking at paved roads and brick buildings. Breaks were more relaxing. I didn’t have to go to the break room and listen to everyone complain about work and complain about work myself. I was able to walk outside for a few minutes and enjoy the scenery. I was able to better utilize my time to get household chores completed. I could put a load of clothes in the washer and dryer and let them run while I worked. I never felt comfortable leaving these machines running unattended when I left home for work. I found that I had fewer bouts of colds and flu because I wasn’t exposed to these germs as much as I had been while working in an office with a lot of other people. The minuses were: I was still working an hour for an hour’s pay. I wasn’t really in business for myself working fewer hours and/or making more money. All my friends would get me to handle errands because I had flexible hours and they could not get off from work. It was great for them but, I still had to put in my hours to get my work done, sometimes late into the evenings. I had to pay for my own supplies and equipment. I had to furnish my own computer, fax machine, computer software, phone lines, etc. This also meant you had to take your time and money to get these things fixed when they were broken. My friends wanted to call me and chat during work hours. The problem was that they were getting paid, because they were on salary, and I wasn’t because I was getting paid by the hour. They also wanted to continue to complain about work and I really wasn’t interested anymore. It was just a waste of time for me. I also had to pay for my own benefits, such as health and disability insurance. I had more tax forms to do in order to pay and report my Social Security and Medicare taxes. How I changed for the better: Even though the pluses outweighed the minuses for me, I still wanted more free time. So, I took a hard look at my day and began to investigate how I could make life better. After some research, I set up my on internet business in niche and affiliate marketing and I haven’t looked back since. It took a little time to get things going but once I had my sites setup and making money, literally while I sleep, I was able to start enjoying more free time. I also changed my circle of friends. I kept a few close friends but slowly began associating with more people who do what I do. They are spread out all across the country and a lot of that association is via phone and email. But, it’s great. They are happy people. They have plenty of money coming in so they can be generous with their time and they love to talk about what they do. I now make enough money to pay an accountant to handle all the mundane tax stuff which also gives me more time. You need investments that make money for you without taking up your time. I have some stock shares in a company that I used to work for years ago. The last year that I worked there they setup an employee stock plan and my number of shares allocated that year was 55 shares. Over the years I have done nothing but let the dividends buy more shares and today I have around 2600 shares and they are worth over 6 figures. The point is I did no work for this growth. This investment is my little reminder that all of my income should be like this. So I now stay focused on ways to make money at home without giving an hour for an hour’s pay. I do have work associated with my internet business but not near the hours that I have previously put in on a job and the money earned is much nicer. I have learned to say no some to my friends when asked to run errands and do things that eat up my time for their benefit. I have also learned to say I need to hang up because I have something that needs to be done when they call just to complain about their job. I no longer want these negative vibes in my life. I no longer worry about my expenses for supplies, computers, etc. because that cost is just a drop in the bucket. I still enjoy all the pluses of working at home but have eliminated more of the negatives. Plus, I make more money and enjoy more free time. If you are currently working at home, take a look at where your day is going and consider some changes for the better. If you still are burdened with working in corporate America then perhaps this information will help you in making a decision to change. I think the most important thing that I did, and you can do also, is I took action to change. You must decide what you really want and just do it. It won’t happen unless you do.
