Before we get to the core of understanding the know-how of editing a book, it would be important to know what is actually meant by editing.

Editing is the process of making any thing presentable and to the point of perfection and also making the desired article to be in synchronization with the current times.

For an example, youngsters would not like to read and strike a chord with the medieval English literature of William Shakespeare times thus it must be edited while retaining its originality so that even people from this generation can enjoy the given novel or book.

Editing also includes corrections as in spellings, grammar, layouts, etc.

Editing a book also follows the same principles.

Why is a book edited?

There are certain reasons for editing of a book, they are;

1) To make any book as direct as it can be so that its very purpose of being written is served ,
2) To check for corrections at various levels,
3) To make any old matter presentable according to the current demands and situation. (Ex- Love thy neighbor must be edited to suite current times as Love your neighbor)

What are the steps required for editing a book?

Once all the important steps such as various checks like grammar etc are done comes the need to emphasize on certain crucial steps before the book is sent to the press. These steps include cover, margins and fonts, headers and footers, chapter heading, picture placement, proof reading tables etc.

Cover- Cover should be attractive and utmost care must be taken to make it sure that the title is spelled correctly and picture if any is in the right order. Also the pricing of the book shall be at the proper place & format.

Margins & Fonts- Margins must not be so much that the text of the book starts to disappear into the binding. Also font of the pages must be in order.

Chapter Heading- Chapter heading must be clear and be in touch with what the chapter talks about.

Picture Placements- Picture must be in their right format of placement and must not appear on the pages as blurred or sluggish.

Proof Reading – Once all the above points have been taken care of, comes the turn of proof reading. It’s the process of reading the whole book thoroughly after all the above steps so as to make sure that there are no path holes for the book at the time of printing.

Table Checking- Table, graphs etc checking also adds to the editing process since their correctness makes the reader’s point of view more clear for a specific topic he is reading on.

Re-Edition- Suppose a book was published 15 years ago but after certain duration of time is not able to retain its relevancy since the times have changed and the way a book is written and read upon is changed too. Thus, it becomes imperative to cater to the ensuing demands and that’s where the technique of re-editing comes in to the picture.

Authors keep re-editing their previous works often when they have to add any new subject matter or to change the overall look of the book making it catchy amongst its target audiences. Thus, re-edition is crucial with its credibility, relevancy and applicability and implementation notwithstanding.
