How To Find A Hair Salon

Are you tired of having a haircut that isn't what you asked for? Do you try to explain exactly what you want and then get something completely different?

Whether it's geographically convenient or you're just stuck it a rut, it could be time to make a bold decision and choose somewhere else to have your latest trim.

But where do you begin?

Start by asking people you know, especially those with nice hair styles, where they go for their cut. The industry relies on recommendations and so reputation is everything. Start with people you know, then move on to the next stage.

Why not seek out reviews on the web? There you'll find people who have first hand experience of the salons you may be considering. It could be a great way to gain lots of information on what they're good at and what they're not so good at.

Ring up and book a consultation with a senior stylist.

It's best to go for a senior stylist to begin with. They do cost more, but they also have the greater experience and expertise. You can always try a more junior stylist further down the line if all you need is a trim.

When you ring up and ask, ask how soon they can fit you in and if they say 'today', then chances are they're quiet and it might be for a reason. If they're busy, that's probably a sign they're doing something right. Proceed...!

When you're on the consultation, you need to be able to explain what you want clearly and concisely. In doing so, you're giving the stylist the best chance of getting it right. It could be, if you've not been getting what you want, that you're not communicating well-enough (or your requests are unrealistic - although if this is the case, a good hairdresser will tell you).

Maybe take in a photo, but make sure it's well-lit and that you can explain how you see it working for you. Tell the hairdresser what you like about your hair and what you don't. If you're sensitive about how sticky-out your ears are or the length of your forehead, tell them. They are there to get the best cut for you, not the best cut for Miss Aniston. Her style could be perfect, or it may need customising to work for you.

The consultation will also give you a good feel for the place itself. If they seem friendly, helpful and attentive, that's a good sign. It also never hurts to be offered a drink while you're waiting.

Don't be put off if the stylist advises you against a particular cut. The better ones have the experience to know what is likely to work and what won't. Listen to what they have to say and take on their suggestions.

If you don't feel safe having a new team completely transform you, then consider letting them just tidy up your existing cut or give you something simple. You can always step up to your dream style further down the line.
