How To Get Out Of A Job You Hate
I do not have to quote the statistics of people who are bored out of their minds with their jobs. They either have made the wrong job or career choice due to the pressures of life, which they now regret, or have been "pushed" into a job or career by peers or even parents, who expected it of them. Is there a way? During my coaching, I find disturbing just the sheer percentage of people in the workforce who do not know what they want to be, either. They are so busy being unhappy with the job/career they hate, that they have not taken the time and not made the effort to really get outta there! I have found that the majority of self help books, programs and gurus will tell you what to do, but almost never how to do it. Now, believe me, there is not "one size fits all" help for people to get out of the job/career they hate, therefore it is so important that people find someone who can take them by the hand, have some clarity of distance and can challenge them throughout the journey. Where to start Most of us may not have the time, or the money to invest in a coach to help us from the start, so I have compiled this blog for those, to start somewhere. This is the same process I use with my coaching clients, with great success. I must warn you: This is not for the faint hearted, it is going to take all your wits, your guts, your strength, but it is worth it! The road to a wonderful destination starts with a single step, so start with this, what do you have to lose? Now, this process will take you anything from several days or several weeks, but that is okay - just keep going. Follow these steps to get out of a job/career you hate: 1. Self Analysis - Find out who YOU really, really, really are - Extremelty important! If you do not know who you are, how are you going to know what your interests and real skills are? You would be surprised at the skewed views people have of themselves, but there are so many easy ways to find yourself. Take a week, a few days, or however long you want, visit some websites which offer free Self Analysis Programs and have some objective analysis done. Find your Personality Type, your Best Skills and your Main Interests - these 3 are the most important. Print the result in big, fat, red letters and put in on your wall or somewhere where you can see it every day. This is YOU, do not forget it and do not let anyone tell you anything else. Even if you are doing another, totally different job, do not ever forget who you really, really, really are. 2. Align who you are with your passion: Although this is really easy most people find it a confusing, difficult step and this is where most people get confused, lose their way and give up. All you have to do is take a piece of paper, put a line through the middle. Write your skills, interests and 3 main points of your now known personality type in the left column from your Self Analysis. Now write in the right hand column things you would just love to do. (not just like - love = your passion) Ø This is the thing that you would do for free... Ø This is the thing that makes time goes by so fast when you are doing it... Ø This is the thing that you cannot stop thinking of talking about when your friends bring it up... Ø This is the thing that you unconsciously have come to know a lot about, because you are so interested in it that you spend most of your free time, doing it or reading about it... Ø This is the thing that gives you a warm feeling in your gut and you just know that it is right... Ø If you cannot find it by yourself, or have a bit of trouble, ask some friends what they think - you would be surprised! Choose the 1-3 things that suit you best and are aligned with your Self Analysis, Skills and Interests. Paste it to your wall! 3. Stay Motivated! Believe me - you are not going to make a success out of this without staying motivated! this is absolutely crucial. Download some motivational audios, e-books, programmes, listen, and read every minute that you can - when driving, when exercising, when relaxing. This is your invisible coach, always there, always motivating, working on your subconsious. This way you are pumping your subconscious mind full of "success" already and let it do the work for you! Exercise your mind and exercise your body - you will soon see the transformation. 4. Become resourceful: Of course there will be obstacles - this is a challenge, it is not your Sunday drive to the park. Find your way over it, under it, around it, through it, if you don't know the answer - ask, search, create it. There are some ways to kickstart your brain to find creative answers... Use the people you love, use resources like the web to your advantage, and if you can, get a mentor, someone already doing it. You would be surprised at how many people will mentor you for free! Keep going, and remember to write everything down. 5. Become an expert in the job/careerr you want by: Create your perfect day - VERY IMPORTANT Ø You can take one day off work right? Take it and live your perfect day, do the things you would do when you are what you want to be, the whole day. Make it real, and if you can, do this again and again, as many times as you can. Ø Write down how it felt, what you did. Ø Paste it to the wall! Practising, getting the skills / experience / qualifications you still lack to do your dream job/career Ø Your "perfect days" will give you the opportunity to study, learn, get experience in your dream job/career, and doing it will make you want to do it even more. 6. When you have made it to this point - you have already made it real. You are already doing your dream job/career at least part time and you will start to recognise and learn ways to monetise it, and what you should be doing to do it full time. You made it! This is it, you made it. Can you see that through this whole process, which is actually just a natural system, I never talked about brainstorming ways to monetise it, how to earn money with (whatever you want to do), just leaving your job or any other "believe and you will make it" gobble de gook. I only gave you a real, natural system to help you. Whether you use it, is up to you. And this is HOW you do it.
