How To Market Locally

Marketing to a local market is not hard if you understand and are aware of the tools available to you. If you’ve done your research correctly, you can find a wealth of information about your market – specifically if you look at the numbers. A student recently stated, “Matt, I use Google to search and find trends in my niche and I have seen that there were 13 million in one country and another three to four million in another country when searching for a particular keyword. How can I market locally to those countries?”

There are really two ways to market locally. You can do it on the pay per click side where you can target specific geographical locations, such as countries, zip codes, etc. This is incredibly useful if you are trying to target a particular city or state. If you use Google Adwords, this is easy to do within your campaign area. It will say, “Where would you like these ads displayed?” This will allow you to choose the areas in which you want them to be displayed.

Next, we have the other side which is the free search side. What you’re going to have to do here is identify the geographic location in your title tag. To give you an example, if I was focusing on Atlanta, Georgia, I could put “Atlanta internet marketing tips.” You want to go into those countries or areas, using the same keywords you were using and find out which words they’re actually using. So, in Atlanta, they actually do type “Atlanta internet marketing tips.” You could also focus on counties and cities or states within those places. For example, “Georgia internet marketing tips” or “United States internet marketing tips.” This broadens your market to open it up for more prospects.

Other things you could do is to look for local sites where you can belong to a network or group of some sort. For example, in Gwinnet County, where I live, we have this thing called Gwinnet Network. You basically pay like ten bucks and you can be on their page forever. Additionally, the Yellow Pages, is another good place to advertise locally in certain geographical locations. Your local Chamber of Commerce is also another excellent option.

So there are multiple ways you can target a local market in order to make things happen. However, the easiest thing to do is the paid pay per click option. You’ll get concentrated results that will not only save you money but get you a more targeted list.
