How To Stop Nighttime Snacking

Nighttime snacking has affected all of us at one time or another. I don’t even want to admit how many times while watching a movie late at night I was enticed to snack because of an advertisement I saw on television. And believe it or not, nighttime snacking is the worst! Not only does your metabolism slow down at night but the foods that we usually consume during these hours are laden with calories. Some of the favorite nighttime munchies include chocolate, chips, and fast food. These particular snacks are popular during the night because they require no preparation. Let’s admit it, the last thing we want to do at night is cook a healthy meal! So how can we avoid these nighttime cravings?

There is no easy way to say this, but the best way to avoid nighttime munchies is to avoid watching cable programming late in the evening. Instead opt for a book, watch a DVD, or play a board game with your kids. I would have to say that more than half of the midnight snacking occurs because of the ads we see on TV during the commercial brakes. And if you absolutely have to watch television, try to avoid commercials. If at all possible, keep yourself busy during these three minutes. Either engage in some light housework, do a couple of exercises, or have a magazine handy. By simply turning down the volume or not looking directly at the television you minimize your chances of giving in to a tasty advertisement. The truth is, you may not even be hungry but a good ad will still have the power to turn your full stomach into a gurgling one. So if you are one of those people who easily gives in to that nighttime snack, try applying some of these tips into your late night routine.
