How To Stop Your Cookies From Coming Out Crumbly

Mary recently took up baking as a hobby, and has been doing it for the last few months. But like most new bakers she has run into to quite a few problems with her home made treats, one of the most common ones is that her cookies always come out crumbly.

After doing some research she discovered that there are several factors that can cause crumbly cookies, here is what she found:

A lot of the time crumbly cookies are not the fault of the baker, instead it could be down to the tools - usually the oven. Over time ovens become less accurate, so you may think that you are baking your cookies at 350 degrees when in fact the actual temperature maybe 5,10 or even 20 degrees higher. This can result in dry, crumbly, over cooked and even burnt cookies.

As a result of this discovery, Mary purchased a cheap oven thermometer to check the accuracy of her oven. It turned out that her oven was fine so she could rule it out as the culprit.

Mary then decided to double check that she was following the recipe properly, and it turned out that she was. She used the right amount of egg, flour, and butter etc.

At this point Mary was baffled because she could not see any other reason why her cookies would not come out the way she wanted them to. Maybe baking just wasn't for her?

A few days later, after speaking to a friend of hers who also likes to bake she found out what was causing her cookies to crumble. It turned out that she was following the recipe properly, but she was not creaming the butter and sugar for long enough. Her friend explained that most cook books recommend that you do this for between 3-5 minutes, but it is better to do it for at least 8 minutes to get the best results. Her friend also explained that this is a very common problem that several new bakers experience.

So if you find that your cookies keep coming out crumbly check to see that your oven is accurate, and make sure that you are creaming the butter and sugar properly.
