How To Treat Penile Papules

Many men are asking, “How can I treat my penile papules?” Other men are reading this thinking, “What the heck are they talking about?” To settle everyone’s curiosity, let’s talk about the most common methods for treating these papules and a brief description of what these penile bumps really are.

What are penile papules?

Penile papules, also known as pearly penile papules, are benign and non-serious growths that appear around the head of the penis. These raised areas of skin are formed when the skin growth mechanism in the penile head malfunctions. This malfunction results in numerous small skin tags that form a circle around the top of the penis shaft, just underneath the skin of the head of the penis.

Treatment for papules

There are several treatment options for penile papules. The main idea to remember is that these papules are not contagious and are more an issue of penile aesthetics than anything else. Patients that are involved in a loving and monogamous relationship can maintain a satisfying sex life simply by leaving the papules alone. Because there is no chance that the papules are contagious and there is no increased risk of penile cancer when having papules, the safest treatment is just to leave them alone.

CO2 laser treatment

Another option that is available is treatment with lasers to remove the skin tags. This method can be done in the office and most men are able to return to work the same day. There is minimal scarring, if any, and a complete recovery is possible in a little under three weeks. Some men complain that they experience discomfort from the scabbing that results, and other men describe it as a burning sensation. Both complaints can be remedied by over the counter pain medications.

Minor surgical incisions
Another method that will quickly remove the skin growths is minor surgery. Having the bumps cut off will leave sores that may take some time to heal. Because this minor surgery leaves open areas on the penis, there is a higher chance of developing an infection at the incision sites after surgery. Men are advised to avoid sexual relations until the area has completely healed to avoid a potential infection.

Treatment for papules doesn’t have to be a complicated experience. Any man that is concerned about the appearance of his penis should contact a physician for more information on how to remove papules from the head of the penis, either with surgery or laser treatments.
