How Water Temperature Affects Bass

It's always good to ask around with local fishermen to find out what works best. But what worked well today might not even catch one tomorrow. Generally early morning and around sunset are the ideal times to fish, but you also have to take in effect water temperatures, moon phases, weather patterns, feeding behaviors, etc. The reason professional fishermen make a living catching fish is that they have mastered these techniques. Not because they have the latest and greatest (and usually most expensive) product on the market. It is almost impossible to teach you everything about these. I haven't mastered it either. But I do hope you can learn something new.

Bass, and any other game fish are cold-blooded. Temperatures rise, bass activity increases. Temperature falls, it decreases. That simple. Any temperature below 45 degrees bass will rarely eat. Now this doesn't necessarily mean you won't catch anything.

COLD Temperatures

Some people have caught their biggest bass in the coldest months. The reason for this is because bass will not go after anything fast and shiny, but rather something large and slow. During this time, bass are lazy and want to eat something large so they do not have to eat again for a while. So during winter months you may not catch as much, but you can still land that lunker if you are patient enough.

HOT Temperatures

This is still a good time. Fishing in extremely hot temperatures is almost the same as cold water. They are not as active in temperatures over 90 degrees and move to the bottom. The major difference is you generally want to fish the opposite as cold water. You want to use fast and shiny lures.

Best Fishing Temperatures

Bass activity starts to pick up at 47 degrees and climbs until about 80 degrees. 80 is the magic number when determining when to fish based on temperature. That is why early summer mornings or evenings. When combined with the other fishing factors this time is a MUST to fish.

But of course the best way to learn optimal fishing times for your area or targeted lake is to fish it often. You will eventually learn what to use and when to use it. One thing might not always work so practice makes perfect!
