Hunting And The Elk Rut

If you're an avid elk hunter then you know that the time is almost here to hear the most beautiful sound in the world, an elk bugle. There's not a better sound in the world to an elk hunter than the sound of an elk bugling at full throttle in the crisp, cold morning mountain air. An elk's bugle will send chills down an elk hunters spine and fill him with a level of excitement that is hard to match.

Depending on where you live elk usually start to rut during the last week of August and through Sept and sometimes even a second time in Oct. If you're lucky enough to have an elk tag during this period then you're the envy of all other elk hunters who either don't have an elk tag or only have a spike bull tag.

Hunting during the elk rut is a hunting experience that can't be matched.

Last year my father was lucky enough to draw a limited entry elk tag here in Utah which happened to start on September 12th and which just happened to run right through the middle of the rut. I can't express how much fun that hunt was. We ended up calling in a great big 6 point bull to about 200 yards using a Carlton's Cow Call which worked like a magnet. We were even fortunate enough to watch the elk we shot fight another bull right before we dropped him in his tracks.

As soon as we squeezed off that cow call all the bulls in the surrounding area went crazy, it was an awesome sight to behold. Unfortunately weren't carrying a video camera. Something we won't forget again.

If you ever get the chance to hunt elk during their rut I recommend that you jump on the chance like flies to stink. You can be rest assured that it will be a hunt you'll never ever forget and will always bring a smile to your face.
