Hunting For Beginners

I live in Western Maryland so most of my best deer hunting is done there. Hunting for white tail deer is challenging. I've not found another animal that is so well equipped when eluding hunters. We have allot of farms in Maryland and Pennsylvania Crop damages for corn were high so that's provide an abundance of food on top of what the forest provides. The 2007 deer hunting season was a bust for me I only saw 1 spike and a couple of doe. I don't like to kill deer that may have me miles out of my way so I make an educated decision about my location.

I've had plenty of friends shoot a deer and almost kill themselves trying to drag deer for miles. Deer hunting in 2008 is shaping up to be be a great season. With the light winter and the lack of deer being bagged during bow hunting season, their seem to be more bucks in my hunting area. I haven't been bow hunting forever and will probably bow hunt this year. My bow hunting equipment seems to be in good shape? I will most likely replace the sights. The lack of predators in my area have allowed the deer population to explode. So this, along with other factors is causing the best deer hunting I've seen in a long time. The amount of people in the wood I hunt has also decreased. Not sure why? Maybe they found a better spot? But I was always told that a dominant buck will hold his territory no matter what, so I think that is just going to increase my odd of bagging a nice buck in 2008.

Some of the interesting characteristics that I've encountered over the years have given me better insight to how a deer act. Although I do not bag a buck every year, I still like to get out their to see all the abundance of nature that my area has to offer. Gun season is what I like most, I hunt with a Marlin 30-30, 150 grain or 180 grain bullet. sometimes the brush is very thick so I use a heavier grain bullet. When venturing into the wood I like to be prepared so I always take the following items with me.

Ruck sack- I use my ruck sack to store my equipment. First Aid/survival kit: I found mine in the camping section of the store. I liked it because it is in a waterproof bag that had everything from bandages to matches and a compass. that will fit well in my ruck sack. Whistle: I have this Incase I'm immobilized and cant be seen. I always keep it in my front chest pocket. Buck knife: I use one with a hook on the end. Water: I make sure I take water in my camel back. It holds about 64 oz. of H2O. I also have some water tablets for emergencies so that I can condition field water. You will need something like this if you are not at the direct ground source where the water is flowing out of the ground. Camo Blind: I also use mine to wrap up in when I'm cold. that's about all the additional gear I take with me. If you would like to provide tips. Please post them in the comments.
Happy Hunting..
