Huntington Beach Photographers Suggest Taking Portraits At Crystal Cove

Obtaining memorable images from a beach photoshoot requires a different set of skills than getting memorable images from a studio. One of the first skills for being a great beach photographer is knowing which beach has the portrait potential and which does not. One of the best beaches in Orange County for taking portraits is located between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach and is not a high priced private beach but rather is a public park – Crystal Cove. Crystal Cove is an excellent location to take beach engagement portraits. This article offers some information to professional photographers who are looking to take memorable sun, sand and surf images for their clients.

The first task is to get to the beach. It is just off of the 1 freeway South of Newport. There is a parking structure on the left hand side of the street. There is a small fee for parking here.

Between the parking lot and the beach, there is a pathway that is lined with trees and other brush. This is a perfect place to get images of couples as they kiss or walk together while holding hands.

A tunnel at the end of the pathway marks the arrival at the beach. This tunnel is a great place to frame the couple for a stunning and unique image. The photographer should try and get a wide variety of shots which are from different distances from the engaged couple.

At the end of the tunnel, there are two old buildings which add variety to the beach shoot. There is a light blue barn and an old 1950 style café. These backgrounds add some real vintage character to the images.
Crystal coves offers opportunities for a variety of shots because is encompasses several miles of beach front. Local professional photographers should become aware of where the best portraits can be taken along this beach front. There are a number of large rocks on which the couple can sit while the sun sets in the background. There are stretches of sand that seemingly go on for miles. There are locations where the waves break high and hard creating a beautiful misty backdrop.
Since the beach is in the heart of Sunny Orange County is Southern California, the water is generally warm enough for a couple get wet.

Often, if done correctly, the expression on the faces of the subjects when the waves hit’s them is so authentic that it becomes one of their favorite images.

Crystal Cove is one of the best locations in Orange County for performing a photo shoot because of the wide variety of backdrops that are available.
