Hypnotherapy And Modern Life: Fear Of Flying, Panic Attacks, Anxiety And Insomnia

Hypnotherapy has for a long time been regarded as a safe, effective treatment for conditions that may prevent us from enjoying life to the full. Especially nowadays, with the fast pace and stress of modern life, many of us may find that hypnotherapy - administered by a professional and qualified hypnotherapist - can represent a quick and valid choice of treatment for many types of problems related to situations of stress that may be triggered by the demands of modern life. These include fear of flying and other phobias, panic attacks, general anxiety and insomnia.

In today’s world, more and more people fly for business or leisure purposes, but many cannot do it because of a deep-rooted fear of flying. Fear of flying may have different causes, but is usually linked to a feeling of lack of control. This is why treatments based on providing information on plane safety may not be enough for many people: if a fear is irrational, treatment may be more effective if administered on a subconscious level. Hypnotherapy can be very effective to cure fear of flying as it can teach the subconscious new ways of coping with flying to replace the feeling of anxiety, powerlessness and panic when on a plane. Experienced, skilled therapists usually have extensive experience of treating people with a fear of flying and one session is often enough to cure it.

Fear of flying is one of the most common phobias, but there are many other phobias which can be treated through hypnosis. A phobia is an irrational fear of something, so a treatment that focuses on the rational level may be ineffective, whereas hypnotherapy can reach and transform the subconscious root of the problem. As well as fear of flying, other common fears that hypnotherapy can successfully cure are dental phobia, animal/insect/bird phobia and needle phobia.

Similarly, hypnotherapy can be used to treat panic attacks. Panic attacks are episodes similar to heart attacks, where sufferers may feel they are about to die: they may experience heaviness in the chest, dizziness, inability to breathe properly and palpitations. These symptoms may be accompanied by either claustrophobia or agoraphobia (fear of closed or open/crowded spaces). Panic attacks may happen in conjunction with a situation of general stress or anxiety, or may occur suddenly. In both cases, hypnotherapy can work at the root of the problem by teaching the subconscious mind how to remain in control, therefore preventing the onset of the feeling of powerlessness which then causes physical symptoms.

Hypnotherapy may also be of help in case of a general feeling of anxiety, whether chronic or caused by a difficult time or a traumatic event in an individual’s life. Hypnotherapy focuses on improving the sufferer’s self-esteem on a subconscious level and can teach them new beliefs, so they will see life in a more positive way. If the feeling of anxiety is linked to an important event, hypnotherapy can help turn the anxiety into ‘good’ stress that makes us perform more effectively because it improves self-confidence and can teach us how to be in control of stressful situations. For example, hypnotherapy can be very helpful in case of exam anxiety or performance anxiety.

Another common condition in modern society which can be treated through hypnosis is insomnia. Insomnia can be either chronic or a symptom of deep-lying anxiety. In both cases, hypnotherapy can teach the sufferer new behaviours to overcome it. In the first case, it teaches the subconscious to relax in order to break the cycle that may make insomnia chronic, i.e. worrying about not being able to sleep, which leads to increased anxiety and makes the condition worse. In the second case, hypnotherapy can teach insomnia sufferers how to cope with stressful moments with confidence and how to regain control over events. In both instances, during the hypnotherapy session, hypnosis itself is often accompanied by practical advice on how to improve sleep quality.

So, hypnotherapy is a valid treatment to overcome many problems that are common in modern life. These include irrational fears such as fear of flying, deep-rooted anxiety and related conditions such as insomnia. Hypnotherapy acts by teaching the individual positive behaviours on a subconscious level which replace the harmful, deep-rooted ones. Hypnotherapy conducted by a qualified and experienced professional helps view the problem in a manageable way, improving self-esteem and making the individual feel in control over their life and over the stressful events that we have to cope with in modern society.
