I Have To Repeat A Class I Took Last Semester: Help!
If you have to take one (or more) classes over again this coming fall, never fear, and certainly don't feel ashamed. Lots of students have to repeat classes, especially if they were taken in the first year of college. Freshman year is an incredibly difficult experience for most students, especially if they are away from home for the first time. Not only is everything strange, including new roommates, new food, new surroundings, and quite a bit of independence (which can be a scary, if liberating, thing), but the classes are hard! Much harder than high school, and no one is standing over you to make sure you do your work.
So, given that combination of things, many students fail one or more classes in their first year of college. No big deal, but you don't want to do that too often because every time you take a class, that's money out of your pocket. Many students, however, are over-confident the second time around. They assume that just because they took the class once, it will be a no-brainer the second time. Sadly, it doesn't work that way.
First, every professor teaches the same class differently, and you have no guarantees that you will get the same professor you had the first time. Second, let's be honest: did you really pay much attention the first time? If not, that would be why you didn't pass the class. No judgment here, but honesty is important to success. Third, you might not have had the necessary skill set to pass the class. Put another way, it might have been too hard.
The first thing you need to do is to think now about why you failed. If it was simply a matter of not paying attention and/or not doing the work, then you can resolve to do better and pass this time. But if you truly had trouble understanding the material, then you cannot assume that this time will be any different. Line up your sources of help now, before school starts.
One incredibly helpful resource is an academic writing and research company. You already have a leg up, so to speak, because you have the syllabus from last semester. Send them the syllabus and ask them what they can do to help you. With a few model papers to guide you, success will be just around the corner this time around.
