Ivf And Endometriosis

I get asked a number of questions about IVF and endometriosis and it is naturally a concern for couples who are having fertility problems and who are contemplating IVF. Endometriosis is a disorder of the womb, whereby the lining grows outside of the uterus, sometimes on the fallopian tubes, ovaries or the lining of the pelvis.

This tissue acts as if it were inside the uterus and therefore responds to the female menstrual cycle. In practice, the lining grows thicker and then breaks down during the monthly period. The broken-down tissue becomes trapped and irritates the surrounding areas. This can result in scar tissue, adhesions or even the binding together of internal organs.

As with many health condition, endometriosis can have varying degrees of severity. Some women will experience no symptoms whatsoever and have normal periods and pregnancies whereas others will experience a number of symptoms including pelvic pain, painful periods, heavy bleeding and infertility. On average, between a third and a half of women with this condition will have fertility problems.

Naturally, those couples experiencing difficulties conceiving who are considering assistance, many wonder if IVF and endometriosis, when combined, are simply no-go areas. This is thankfully not the case. In some instances, the infertility brought about by endometriosis can be due to the egg being trapped near the ovary or the tissue can inhibit the mobility of the fallopian tube, thus impairing the natural ability of the tube to capture the egg and move it safely on its way.

Therefore, if you have endometriosis and IVF is an option, it is certainly worth exploring, with many women becoming good candidates for IVF as the other mechanics of conception and pregnancy are not usually impaired.
