A victim of identity theft can loose their financial security without being able to stop it from crumbling around them. They also loose their sense of security because they have been violated in one of the worst ways possible. Ask anyone who has been a victim of such a crime and they will tell you they constantly live in fear that it could happen to them again. It can take years for them to start trusting again and often they need to seek professional assistance in order for it to happen.


Being a victim of identity theft can completely ruin a person’s life as they know it. The amount of money or property they loose in the process is unbelievable. Add to that the thousands of dollars they have to come up with in order to try to get their name cleared in the transactions. It can be difficult to convince creditors that they are a victim of a crime instead of just abusing the credit they have been extended. It can also be virtually impossible to secure new credit.

In addition to helping them find low cost assistance for the legal issues they offer free counseling. They work hard to help the individuals and their families move past what has taken place. Many of their volunteers are lawyers who assist with filing the necessary paperwork and work with the victim to compile the necessary information.

The amount of damage that is done from identity theft is different for each case. Thousands of dollars can be racked up in new charges and new accounts opened before the person is aware of it. You should carefully monitor your credit reports on a regular basis. Make sure you report any errors immediately. There are also software programs that you can purchase in order to be able to monitor your credit online. Other service agencies offer to do it for you and charge a low monthly fee. The more you do know to prevent identity theft the safer you will be.
