Diabetes as a disease is not limited to a particular age but can strike at anytime. However, there are significant differences between the way it occurs in adults and in children.
Warning symptoms of diabetes among children include intense thirst and excessive pissing, which may cause bedwetting. The child loses weight and experiences puking and pain in the stomach. In advanced stages, the breath starts smelling sweet and the skin and tongue become dry. Poisons start accumulating in the blood and make it acidic ( a condition called ketoacidosis ). The child feels drowsy, blood pressure becomes low, heart beat lowers down and the child may become semiconscious or comatose.
Whilst the reasons behind diabetes in youngsters remain unknown, a link between the diseases and various external factors is advised. These external factors include bacteria, poisons and pathogen. Kids may also inherit the issue from their parents or anybody else in the family.
To deal with child diabetes, the family has to have a comprehensive knowledge of the different aspects of diabetes and its treatment. Help can be received from doctors, hospital groups and social service groups.
1. Learning to administer insulin injections. 2. Determining symptoms of acidosis. Three. Measuring blood glucose levels with monitor. 4. Coaching the child to self administer injections. Five. Contacting local diabetes organisation for support.
Proper diet is an important factor in the management of juvenile diabetes. The diet of your youngster should rely on their weight and age. You must give your youngster a nutritious balanced diet that is loaded in fiber and carbohydrates. Dry fruits, cheese crackers and skimmed milk are acceptable snacks for children with diabetes.
Also, there are certain food items that your youngster must refrain from. All processed flour products like white bread etc must be avoided. Foods with high sugar content like pastries, chocolates, cakes, candies, tinned fruits should also be evaded. You must also limit the consumption of drinks like tea, coffee and cocoa in your youngster.
However, if your child is involved in sports that are physically challenging then you need to make special diet arrangements. Give him snacks that can boost his/her energy levels. Giving your child beverages with artificial sweeteners during travel is also a good idea.
You should teach the importance exercise to your diabetic child. Exercise helps control weight, reduce blood sugar level and improve blood circulation in diabetic children.
