Improve Your Memory By Understanding How Memories Are Stored

How does our memory actually work? Before you can learn how to improve your memory I believe is important that you understand how memories are formed. How our brain actually acquires information and stores it as memories is truly a fascinating subject.

1. Acquiring new information
There are times when you are required to memorize certain pieces of information. In order for your brain to store this information as a memory, you will need to concentrate. You must focus on the information that you trying to memorize. The new information that you're retaining travels through pathways in the brain by means of neurotransmitters. The hippocampus part of brain encodes this information and decides where to Store it.

2. Long-term memories
In order to improve your memory you will have to concentrated while receiving the new information you're trying to remember the hippocampus of your brain will store this information as a long-term memory. Memories are more easily stored in your long-term memory when you have some type of emotional connection to the information.

3. Retrieval
When you want to retrieve the stored information your brain go through the exact same process of retrieving the information as it did when it stored it.
This is why when you need to recall certain information more frequently it becomes much easier, because the pathways to this information have been used frequently.

4. Deterioration
Unfortunately as we grow older the hippocampus part of the brain becomes extremely vulnerable and begins to deteriorate as we age. This affects our ability to both retain and retrieve information. Experts believe this is due to the loss of neurons which in turn affects the activity of the neurotransmitters to do their work properly.

5. Plenty of theories
Another theory for this deterioration of your memory is that as we age we become less active. Because of this reduction in activity there is less blood flow to the brain than there was when we were younger and more active.

These changes however only seemed to slow down a person's ability to retrieve and store new information, and not actual memory loss. In fact, most of the factual information that a person has gathered over the years remains largely intact.

Age naturally will play a large part in memory loss however by making simple behavioral changes in our daily activities we can help determine our own fate there is plenty of information available to help get on the proper path to healthy lifestyle .The benefits of a sensible exercise program combined with a healthy eating diet will not only prolong our lives but also help improve your memory, and retain our old memories.

Many people believe that they have poor memories many times the efficiency of memory is directly related to how we go about storing the memory. This may be because you do not have such effective ways in which you are able to not only acquired the information, but the way in which your brain processes it. However, unless you are suffering from some type of disease, disorder or injury, then you should have the ability to improve your memory.
