Improving Gas Mileage On Your Jeep

The first tip is to slow down.

Driving under the speed limit greatly reduces gas mileage, especially on highways. An added benefit is increased safety for yourself and those around you.
Try to ease into accelerations.
Avoiding unnecessary breaking will also cut down on gas mileage.

The second tip is to give your engine a makeover.

Check your air filter. If it's dirty or old, replace it.
Check your spark plugs and adjust or replace as necessary.
Keep an eye on fuel injectors and replace as necessary.
Replacing an old oxygen sensor can improve gas mileage by up to 40% alone.
Always use the motor oil grade recommended in your Jeep's manual.
Schedule bi-yearly tune-ups with your mechanic and be sure to have your Jeep ready to pass emissions inspection.
Weather permitting, turn off your air conditioner and roll down your windows.
Limiting the frequency you use your Jeep's all wheel drive feature will also improve gas mileage.

While not a part of your engine, checking tire pressure is another step you can take to improve gas mileage.

The third tip is to use common sense.

Plan the most efficient routes when traveling in high traffic.
Try to avoid rush hour traffic if at all possible.
Combine multiple errands into one shopping trip. Just two trips out in a day uses more fuel than a longer, multi-stop trip.
Try to avoid long idling times. If you are stuck in a traffic jam, consider turning off your engine. Idling longer than 30 seconds uses more gas than starting up your engine.

For long trips avoid using your roof rack. While handy, loaded roof racks decrease fuel economy by 5%.
In general the more weight you carry the more you decrease in fuel economy.
Utilize your Jeep's cruise control feature. Maintaining a constant highway speed will prevent excess gassing. An exception to this would be mountainous driving.

Following these simple tips will see dramatic improvement in gas mileage for your Jeep.
