Incorporate Antioxidants Into Your Diet To Remain Free Of Disease

There is enough proof that we in the current generation are grossly neglecting our bodies and are consequently paying for it in the form of various diseases and illnesses. Some of the diseases are pretty new and were unheard of some decades back. It just goes to show that changes in the environment, lifestyle habits and neglect of the body are leading to such diseases gaining the upper hand. It also demonstrates that the immune system of our bodies is being compromised severely. Medical experts have attributed this to the growing threat of free radicals that cause havoc in the metabolism and advocate the intake of sufficient quantities of antioxidants in the diet to counter the negative effects of these free radicals.

So how do these antioxidants actually work?

Well, our bodies on a daily basis keep producing or releasing free radicals that are due to the factors mentioned above. They are improper food habits, pollution, stress and lack of physical activity. These free radicals being highly unstable molecules therefore tend to destroy other vital cells in the body in order to gain stability and this process of destruction can lead to damaging consequences in the form of various illnesses. Antioxidants inhibit the rapid growth of such free radicals and neutralize their negative actions through the process of oxidation.

Antioxidants can be found as supplements in solid, liquid forms. They are fat soluble and regular intake ensures that the body immune system becomes strong enough to fight these free radicals and keep them in check. While antioxidant supplements are very effective, you should also know that many foods contain enough of them and as long as you take such foods in the right quantities, you would be providing your body with the required resisting capacity to fight illnesses and diseases.

So which are the foods that are rich in antioxidants?

The first preference should be given to fruits and vegetables. These are naturally occurring foods and their intake is crucial for good health. You can also add legumes, nuts, grains and seeds in good quantity to your diet as they go through minimal processing and are therefore easily absorbed by the body. Legumes, berries, nuts and some of the spices like cinnamon have been found to be rich in antioxidants.

Similarly fresh fruits in both raw as well as juice form along with all varieties of tea are high in antioxidants. Sea vegetables are also rich in them. You thus need to incorporate a combination of such food along with supplements in the right quantity for continued good health. Also remember to keep away from smoking and alcohol as they have been found to promote the release of free radicals in the system and that you know is dangerous to your health.
