Increasing Number Of Domestic Airlines In India

With the deregulation of the aviation industry and India’s current booming economy, has drastically changed the scene of air travel in India. In the current scenario, there are many aviation companies catering to all categories of customers. Today, in India, we have one government owned full service airline, seven privately owned low cost carriers, and two privately owned full service airlines.

The low cost domestic airlines have greatly changed the way people travel in India. Even the below middle class category people have now days begun to travel through the airlines. They find it to be more convenient, fast, and comfortable; and the air fare more or less equals that of the rail fare.

Travel through air is no more a pinch on the pocket. Even the “saving” Indian, who thinks twice before spending, is no more hesitant in shelling out the bucks to travel. And it’s even not that big a deal today to fly; firstly, because Indians are earning more and more; and secondly, because cheap flights are easily available.

The large number of domestic airlines in India, namely, Goair, IndiGo, Air India Express, Kingfisher Red, Jet Lite, Jet Konnect, and Spice Jet have greatly contributed to the low ticket prices. With such huge competition existing in the market, every airline is vying with the other to grab a bigger market share.

When the supply is so huge, and demand is marginally low, going by the basic fundamentals of economics, prices are bound to be low. To match this demand-supply gap, airlines have come up with a low pricing strategy to attract and retain their customer base. Many airlines have started offering great deals and discounts and the cheapest airfares. This is acting as a great motivation for the people to fly and travel.
