Information About Stuttering

In this article I will be writing about the speech impediment commonly known as stuttering or stammering. I am a person who has personal experience of this condition and am happy to report that I have now managed to overcome my own stutter and am very much enjoying life as a fluent person. It took along time to kill the demons that were in my head, that annoying voice that would attempt to convince me that I would be unable to say certain words. This was the biggest battle of life thus far and was one that I was determined to win.

It is said that around one percent of the UK population has a stutter. This may not sound like a lot but reality it is a huge amount of people. Seven out of ten people who have a stutter are male and the speech impediment is more likely to start in childhood.

My own stutter originated when I was four years of age. I have to admit that I do not remember too much from this period of my life but my parents have filled me in with what happened. I was not exactly the most confident of young boys and was a bit wary of meeting new people, to say that I was shy would have been an understatement. Due to the fact that both of my parents went to work, I had to go to a friend of the families after school. It was at this ladies house where I first started to stutter. It was mainly when I was asked a direct question, I felt under pressure for some unknown reason which possibly led to my struggles.

I found school to be a bit of a nightmare. Even though hate is a strong word, I hated school. I found it very difficult to read out aloud and would rarely take part in class discussions.

After living with the speech impediment for eighteen years, I finally managed to achieve fluency at the age of twenty two.
