Information Guide - Smart Cards
A smart card is akin to a plastic card and has the same size of a credit card integrated with an embedded microprocessor chip. This chip has the capacity to store data information that is about 100 times greater than a magnetic stripe. We can add, rearrange, and delete the data by reprogramming the chip. Here is a quick procedure for creating smart cards: 1.Manufacturing the IC (integrated Chip) 2.Placing the IC Chip into a module 3.Choosing Data 4.Producing the card 5.Printing the card 6.Embedding the chip module 7.Personalisation of the chip 8.Interfacing with a Terminal Types of Smart Cards There are typically two types of Smart Cards. They are Memory Cards & Microprocessor Cards. Memory Cards Sometimes referred as synchronous cards, these are mainly made use for storing information. Common applications include prepaid telephone cards in public telephone booths. There are no general protocols for communicating with memory cards. No international standards exist for the regulation of communications protocol between the smart cards and the terminals. This type of card are sub-divided into two groups namely 1.EEPROM Memory Cards for data storage 2.Memory Cards with Registers An EEPROM Memory card is a storage card with rewritable memory. This card is used to hold info like buyer profile for loyalty card or database information that can be transferring from an application to another. Memory cards integrated with registers have a very limited memory sizes. The registers make use of use hard-wired logic to decrement a large number via a number of counter stages with values in the decreasing order. When all the counters stages have been done in, there is no value or money left on the card. They are discarded because these cards are not rewritable. Microprocessor Cards The Microprocessor Cards are truly Smart Cards also known as asynchronous cards. Some of the common applications include Identification & the Electronic Purse. The chip comprises a Memory area ranging from 1 kilobyte to approximately 64 KB at present. Unlike memory cards that do not have standardized protocols, the layout of the pins for micro-controller card is standardized in accordance with the International Standards Organizations (ISO).
