When setting up your dollhouse and buying furniture you will need to remember the three sizing constraints. The first sizing element of miniatures is the scale, the second is the room dimensions, and third is sizing miniatures next to one another. The first is the miniature scale, and you could really lose some money buying the wrong size. Meaning that if you have a half inch dollhouse that you need to purchase half inch dollhouse furniture. Size element is the second point, and this is as simple as making sure that your furniture will actually fit in the room. Make sure that you measure your furniture room and are aware of the dimensions of the furniture that you buy. The last point is relative size; this means that within a room you can coordinate the pieces. Larger pieces will have more of a prominence so if you really want to make your china cabinet pop you shouldn’t make the dining room table so elaborate.
How Many? The reality of that question applied to Miniatures
It depends - this is the easiest way to answer to the question: Can I put too many pieces of doll furniture in one room?It depends on the size of the room and what you are trying to say. First, the rule of thumb is not trying to cram too much furniture, yes I know that it is fun, but everything has its limits. Second, having everything in means that what was not there is gone. You see sometimes it is not about what is in the room but what is not. If you notice a space balanced room your eye is more relaxed as it doesn't have to weed out the mess. But don't think that all space is better, because an empty room is just as bad as a cluttered or crammed one. In the end there is no true answer because there are some many variants.
Adding a Mood
The mood of the room should be a designers motivation and no other, it is the mood that dictates color and furniture, and not the other way around. The mood of the room is chosen by the expectations of those that do, or plan to use it. An example is that you would have a kitchen to eat, have conversation, relax, cook etc. Another example would be a bedroom, which is more personal, intimate, and is directly affected by the personality of the resident. Those dollhouses that are awe inspiring tap into the settings and mood of each room to design it. Visualize what mood you would like to portray in your rooms, for what purposes would they have that room and what particular mood would they set. As you increase your miniaturist talent with your own dollhouses people will notice the particular moods, and even though they can't quite put there finger on it, they will be impressed.
Floor Trim for your Dollhouse
If you are a true crafter you are constantly tweaking your creations. There are some great things that you can add to your house, and I just simply came across one that helped out a lot. I discovered the importance of having trim around your floor. Floor Trim is not a new creation, but what I found is instead of buying it, to use a very thin balsa wood found in most craft stores. I applied this balsa wood to the floor of each of my walls to form a great outline along the bottom. What I found is that they covered up the tiny bumps between the walls and the flooring. The wallpaper walls were also trimmed and I was really happy to see that it prevented fraying due to covering the edges. This discovery truly was a small one, but I believe that it really added to my dollhouse.
