Innervation Energy Solutions – A New Business In A New Industry

Energy auditing is still very much a new and evolving industry. Even the most established companies in the field have been in business for less than 8 years. From a business standpoint, this is a very interesting time to get involved, as there are essentially two main ways to gain a foothold at this time. The first is to be the biggest spender and ensure that you are “loudest” competitor in terms of advertisement, so when a customer is looking for business they find you first. The other approach is to identify a key aspect of the industry that allows a business to differentiate and surpass all of the competition.

This second option is what I would like to focus on for the introductory blog post for Innervation Energy Solutions. When forming our business we took a long look at where the industry was at, and what where areas that could use improvement, and what we found really should not be that surprising. Particularly as this is a new industry, the vast majority of players had evolved into it from a related field, in this case construction. We found that almost all energy auditing companies were run not by people with expertise in energy efficiency, but by contractors. Which is not to say that they were bad, by all means, years of working with homes gave many of these people real world experience to state what actually helps with reducing energy and what doesn’t. With that said, we believed that this was only tangentially their field, and having a team with a background explicitly in energy efficiency would be able to derive a process that would deliver better results.

It was on this principal that we founded Innervation Energy Solutions. To start the business with someone who had a fundamental knowledge of energy reduction strategies, we took on Arran Blattel. Arran graduated with a Master’s in Earth Systems from Stanford University, focusing his studies on the convergence of Economics, Energy, and Civil Engineering. He later worked at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories working on energy reduction strategies for commercial buildings. Beyond Arran, every person working with IES has a college degree and has a deep understanding of the science behind the concepts we are working with in the field. We believe that having people like this in our company gives us the competitive advantage we need to create a product that exceeds that of our competition.
