If you have completed a kit, furnished it, and are looking for another adventure then try lighting. Adding Lights removes your miniature set from being just another toy to a display item that will sit no longer in the toy box, but on the living room mantel. I am not going to lie; lighting is fun, but also a bit challenging. In all reality, would we enjoy it if it wasn’t a challenge? When you break it down, lighting is simply connecting electricity through a wire and a plug. And to add upon that there are great step by step instructions that come with most kits to help you along the way. As will all aspects of this game, things will get easier with time. When you start with your first kit, get a small one just so you don't overwhelm yourself, something small and easy. Remember it is only hard or challenging if you make it out to be.
Life Touches: Dollhouse Accessories
Little details will have a really big effect in this hobby, and there are thousands of doll house accessories that you can have. These small details can be anything from small toothbrushes in the bathroom, to magazines for the bedroom bookcase. Not only will these little trinkets add a flare to your doll's house, but it will make your friend's dolls jealous. Also, accessories add that lived in touch. In reality sky is the limit in dollhouse accessories; you can even start making your own
An Addition that can make a Big Difference
If you are a true crafter you are constantly tweaking your creations. The last dollhouse that I was making I discovered a great addition that really made my interior stand out. I simply created a floor board to use for the trim around the floor of the dollhouse. Floor Trim is not a new creation, but what I found is instead of buying it, to use a very thin balsa wood found in most craft stores. I applied this balsa wood to the floor of each of my walls to form a great outline along the bottom. I was most impressed to not see any more tiny cracks between the wall and the flooring due to the trim covering it up. It also prevented the wall paper to come unglued because I was covering the bottom edges with the trim. This discovery truly was a small one, but I believe that it really added to my dollhouse.
Planning and Preparation with your Miniatures
Every great designer knows to start with a plan. A plan of action is crucial because it will keep you on a track leading to success. A basic floor plan and a budget should be the minimum of your list; these at least will get you started. A floor plan will consist of measurements, color, furniture pieces, and a good rough outline of the room. There is a plentiful supply of examples of good room designs both online and offline. Simply take note of a great room that you saw at a friend’s house and make notes on what you liked and what you didn’t. Take these notes and modify your plan. Now budget those items that you are interested in and try hard not to go over it. Unfortunately for hobbyists miniatures can get a little expensive. In my opinion it is better to save up for a nice piece of furniture rather than going ahead with a cheap copy.
