Inspiring Ideas To Turn Your Den Into A Travel Destination

When searching for decorating ideas for your den, the possibilities are endless. But you want something different; something that really speaks to you. So close your eyes and imagine that perfect travel destination. Are you envisioning the endless beaches and awe-inspiring sunsets of Hawaii or perhaps you fantasize about spending a month in the French countryside or enjoying the mystique of Venice, Italy? Wherever your thoughts lead you, use these inspiring ideas to turn your den into a travel destination without ever leaving your home.

Finding inspiration is as simple as just remembering your last vacation or thinking about the one you have always dreamed of taking. Everyone has a place they enjoy being, spending relaxing hours away from home. Browsing through photo albums or scanning the pages of books and magazines is another way to get inspirational ideas for your den design.

Let’s say that you’ve chosen the seashore as your destination theme. Incorporate the colors of the seashore into your room design: the cool blues and greens of the ocean, the tan of the beach and touches of gold for the sunsets. Paint the walls in a neutral color reminiscent of sand. Start with the basic pieces of furniture, such as the sofa and chairs. Cover them in a nautical blue and white stripe or a soothing solid blue or sea green upholstery. Accent them with colorful pillows embroidered with seashells.

Once the key furniture pieces are in place, add the accents. A distressed coffee table is the perfect accompaniment to a seashore themed room. Also, dark wood is a great compliment to the lighter colors, lending a very rich element.

Use nautical items, such as seashells, boat models and nautical instruments to accent the room. Fill baskets with seashells and add splashes of color with collections of sea glass. Hang a collection of photos that depict the sea and its many trappings. Bring the seashore to your den without tracking in sand!

If your idea of travel is to spend a few weeks exploring Europe, start with an aged finish to your walls that reflects the texture of old world England or the ancient ruins of Rome. Hang panoramic photos of these faraway places or display a collection of vintage travel posters. Take your color cues from these posters and bring in wonderful accessories that tie everything together.

A beautiful Venetian mask from Venice, a miniature replica of the Eiffel tower or a beautiful Scottish throw enlivens the space. A set of vintage suitcases plastered with travel stickers is always a great find and stacked beside the sofa can double as a table.

An eclectic mix of furnishings is ideal for this style of decorating, as it celebrates the different areas to which you want to travel. Combine a beautiful Chesterfield sofa with a carved black lacquer cabinet from China. Or for a more casual design, select a sectional sofa, a club chair with ottoman and a beautiful pine cabinet. Let the accent furniture and accessories add the travel flair.

The central idea of a travel destination den design is to have fun. Make this space yours—a place where you want to settle in after a long day of work or a busy week. This is the place where you will spend time with family and friends, gathering for fun, relaxation and good conversation. Unpack those bags, put away the passport, kick off your shoes and simply relax at home in your den.
