Installing A Small Office Network

It is not surprising that office networking is hot: If you want all your computers to share an Internet connection, this information will help you make the right decisions.

Learn the Lingo
1. A router relays data between your broadband connection and your PCs.
2. A network adapter connects to each computer. It sends data from the computer to the router.
3. Internet Protocol (IP) addressing is a unique computer ID on the Internet. When you have a computer network, all PCs utilize the same IP address.
4. A print server is a special network card that is used to connect a printer to a network. With a print server network it allows multiple computers to share one printer.

Choose a network type
1. The computer's wireless network uses radio waves of a special router called an access point. A base station can serve the best small-sized offices. Trade name of this technology is Wi-Fi 802.11b, or a faster version 802.11g. Wi-Fi products should be compatible with each other regardless of brand. Wireless networks work for people who move from one room to another, and their laptops, or you want to use in bars, airports and other locations where wireless service is available.
2. Hook up with the safest office network, a wired network, also called Ethernet 10-BaseT or 100-Base-T. If your broadband connection, router and all computers are in one place, it is the best choice. But because of its special lines, it is also the least flexible if your needs change.

Buy your Network Equipment
1. For a single router office, If you're going wireless, this router is called an access point or base station.
2. Get a network adapter for each computer. The easiest way to plug into your computer is through a universal serial bus (USB). If you use a wired network, your computer probably already has an Ethernet network interface card (NIC) in it.
3. Buy extra long ethernet cable (also known as Category 5 or Cat5 cable) if you are using a wired network.
4. Buy a print server if you want to put a printer on the network. Make sure the connectors on the print server and printer match.
