Today I wanted to touch base on using proper etiquette when posting in online marketing forums.
You see a while back while doing a little reading on an extremely popular internet marketing forum, and while i was reading i noticed a topic about a good friend of mine in the online marketing community and decided to read it.
Now this was a good respectable topic for the forum, but about 5 or 6 posts into it it started to turn ugly. Some people in the forum decided to start bashing my friend about a comment he made about his up and coming workshop that he is hosting.
Normally I try not to spend too much time reading in forums especially when a post becomes over 3 pages long, but i just had to see how far this was going to go. It got pretty bad.
As i was reading i actually started to get sick to my stomach. The people in this forum usually take their marketing career very seriously, but had no idea that they were actually committing career suicide.
This forum actually has some of the biggest names in internet marketing popping by. I know that Google techs and even the president of aweber are members of this forum.
So just think every post you make on a forum will be viewed by thousands of other online marketers, and you will be judged by the contents of your posts. If your posts portray a very unprofessional image that is going to affect your business. People remember the names of people they do not like.
The next time you contact someone attempting to establish a business partnership like a joint venture, and they are not interested, it may very well be the result of a post that you made in your favorite forum.
So when posting in forums, stick to these 4 guide lines and you will become a respected member.
1. Do Not Spam The Forums
What I mean about forum spam is posting or starting threads that obviously is just a ploy to get traffic to your site.
Yes, it is known and has been published several times that forums are a highly effective way to drive traffic to your targeted audience, but use some common sense. People come to forums looking for information about a certain topic, so you should give the users exactly what they are looking for, quality information.
If your first post on a forum talks about your product or service most people are not going to respect you, and you may get banned from the forum.
2.Provide Quality information
As we just discussed, providing good quality information on marketing forums will gain you respect and will also show you as an expert in your field. once you prove to the members of the forum that you know what you are talking about then they will be more likely to visit your site when you mention your products or services.
3. Maintain A Professional Image
When posting on forums you want to maintain a professional image at all times. You never know who may read you post. If you just applied for a new job you wouldn’t show up to an interview in your undies right? Well the same applies here. Forums are not a place to let your hair down, and just spit out random thoughts without thinking first. Everything you say and do may be closely examined by potential customers or business partners.
4. Keep It Civil
Yes its true, no matter what you say and how much knowledge you may have in a certain area, there are going to be people who will disagree with what you are saying, and try to discredit you or put you down. Do not feed into this environment. if this happens to you do not retaliate and stoop down to their level. Do not make personal attacks, simply explain your points and get out.
You do not want to get pulled into a pool of negativities.
When all else fails just remember that the laws of attraction are always at work. If you allow your self to be pulled into negativity then negative things will happen. If you always keep a positive out look on things than positive things will happen in your life.
