Internet Startup Plan

Starting a new business requires a business plan. It's a good idea to think of a business plan as a story about how you would like your business venture to turn out, starting in the present, and ending a year or so in the future. This story shouldn't just be an optimistic vision of how you will become a multimillionaire over night. It should tell you how you are going to make customers, how much money you will need to spend each month, the kinds of profits you are realistically expecting to make, and how many hours of work you will need to put in in order to make all of this work. This is just as true for an internet startup as it is for anything else.

A business plan should should start with an analysis of your projected monthly cash flow. There are several tools to help you with this online. This is a great way to make yourself aware of the potential costs and profits that you will encounter each month. Once you have done this you should start looking at a projected statement of profits and losses for your first year.

Of course, when working with an internet startup there is no way to predict the future. You can't know how many customers you will really make. The purpose of looking at your projected cash flow is not to predict the future, but to make yourself aware of the challenges that you will be facing. These challenges include questions about how you will let people know about your services, how you will convince people to pay for them, and how do you increase your customer base.

A website by itself is not going to create a profit on its own. Do not expect an internet startup to be an overnight success that pulls in all the customers simply on its own merits. You will need to find ways to direct people to visit your website to find out more information about a topic. To do this you will need to write up a marketing plan. Part of this process will involve advertising, part of it will involve getting links from related sites, and part of it will involve search engine optimization.

Of course, a business plan is not a crystal ball, but it will let you know what kinds of expenses you could be potentially facing so that they won't take you by surprise.
