Introduction To Functional Training
Unlike traditional weight training that focuses mainly on single joint heavy loads functional training aims to mimic real life movements. This helps enhance and improve coordination and functional strength. While weight training is great for building bigger more powerful muscles it does little to improve agility and functional strength. A traditional program like the one you are used to includes lifts like curls, bench press, leg extensions, and tricep push downs. These isolated movement are ideal of weight loading and muscle building. However, if you stop and analysis these movements they don't really serve any real life application. A functional training program would focus more on push ups, lunges, and squat presses for example. The squat press is a weight squat that includes a shoulder press at the top of the movement.
