To answer that question, let me tell you about this commercial which you might have also seen on TV, it is about a cable company that states how their broadband service is ten times quicker compared to the DSL provided by telephone companies. This commercial is misleading because the cable company makes it appear that the service that they provide is cut above the other telephone DSL provider.

You might be asking why it is misleading, well, let’s make an example to make it easier and clearer to understand. For instance, a cable company will give you a 7 meg. Broadband service and the telephone company will also give you the same 7 meg. DSL service. Clearly, their speed is just equal. The main difference is that the 7 meg. service from the telephone company is meant for you alone, nobody shares your line. On the other hand, the cable company will split your line to provide service to the whole vicinity.

This simply explains that you’re sharing or splitting your Internet bandwidth with your entire neighborhood. So, if your neighbor has a broadband Internet, your other neighbor will also get broadband service as they will share the similar line. In turn, this sharing can result to slower internet service. In other words, the more households who get a broadband, the slower your speed and service will be.

The rates for either broadband or DSL service in not an issue anymore because as both phone and cable go on pricing wars, you benefit from it since they will always make their rates lower just to defeat the competitor. Over-all, to get the most value for your money, you can go for DSL service where you will have your own line and nobody to share it with.
