Is It Worth Doing Abs's Without Resting?

When I became an bodybuilding instructor, on the first day a student asked me:

- Hey Kurt! You told me to do 4x15 of the regular abs and 4x15 of the inclined ones, that's not much is it?
- No because you are a beginner and if you exercise too much, instead of gaining muscle mass, you will lose the little that you have.
- But this way I will not lose belly!
- You will, but also will lose muscle and therefore, your belly will come right back. Dude, my advice is: take it easy, slowly.

And what happened? He ignored me. Stayed all afternoon doing abs's and, besides not making any of the other exercises, done 10 times what I told him to do. Obviously he did not know how to lose belly and had no notion that exercising until you drop dead is always a terrible idea.

The next day he showed up (I gave him a A, B, C workout), when he arrived at the training day B (Wednesday), he did not come, nor in training C. Only in another monday he came. He was avoiding me all the time and returned to doing the abs. I was kind of bothered by that, I got to the student and said:

- Dude! I know you want to exercise to lose belly fat but do not ignore the other parts of your body! Bodybuilding is not just abs's! You do not lose weight just by doing it just for one or two years! If you want to do things the hardest waythat is, be aware that the results will be a disgrace. Follow the workout that I've given you before your health gets jeopardized.

He was ashamed. Then he told me he saw on the internet a guy who had lost weight fast while only doing abs and a diet of carrot juice (!). I looked him in the eye and he understood at once what was my opinion on the subject. Amazing how some people insist on going to the gym just to waste time and to look dumb.

So guys, when I (or any teacher or instructor) pass you a list of exercises to follow, ignore what you read on the net about miracle diets and crazy exercises, that's all nonsense. I know you may find that you understand more than your teacher, and after a few months you may even do (if your instructor is awful) but as a beginner, please: Just follow the plan and stop fooling around.

Got it?
