Is Ivy League Really Worth The Effort?

There are quite a few college students that believe a degree is a degree. Yet still there are many who buy into the fact that the name that is on your diploma means something in terms of how much earning potential you have and the places that you can get a career once you graduate.

Both schools of thought are actually proper. It simply depends on what field you are going into as to whether or not the school name on the top of your diploma will factor into the decision or not. These days if you want to make a lot of money then many organizations will consider you a better catch if you do have the Ivy League degree. Yet still others are not willing to pay top dollar just to someone who has a degree from Harvard or Yale or Cornell and instead want to see not only that you have a degree from one of these prestigious universities but that you were in the top 5% of your class as well.

A degree is a degree and in an endeavor to save money many people who have the funds to attend an Ivy League school either transfer in after they have a few years of college to their name or simply get a degree from a lower ranking university. Naturally, as long as you are getting a degree in something other than Medicine or Law then you will likely discover that a degree from a lower level school will still allow you to draw a decent salary.

Employers currently are looking for the entire package and therefore you will find that holding an Ivy League degree as you move through the door for an interview is not going to be enough. The current marketplace is overloaded with eligible candidates and therefore you are going to have to do more than just show up with a prestigious degree. You are also going to have to be dynamic with amazing communication skills, be a leader and extremely innovative, in addition to being a go getter and hard worker.

Even if you satisfy every criterion and have the Ivy League diploma you may still not get the job because there is an interpersonal component that plays a role in every job interview. Making sure you cover all of the bases and have the high end degree and have a good standing in your class will most definitely make obtaining a good job a little simpler, but in the end you will have to bring your A game if you really want the job.

It used to be a degree did all the communicating for you but many employers have found that those who hold these big degrees are inclined to lack communication and interpersonal skills. No longer can you ride on your degree alone and if you don't have the big degree still go for the better jobs because that is only one facet of the things that a would-be employer will be looking at when you interview for a job in 2012.
