Is Leopold A Good Rifle Scope?
Although Fred Leupold started the company, it was originally called Leupold & Voelpel (after one of the partners). In 1942, the company decided to change it's name to Leupold and Stevens Instruments Company. A Leupold family member was a fan of hunting and, one day, brought up the problems that were common with rifle scopes of that time period. This led to Leupold entering the rifle scope market in 1947, by introducing a model called the Plainsman. The success of the Plainsman model led Leupold to enter in a supply contract with the U.S. armed forces during 1947 and 1948. In 1949, Leupold went a step further and went on to become the first riflescope manufacturer that began purging tubes of air and refilling them with nitrogen. The techniques effectively solved the fogging problem that was common of scopes produced during this time period. That technology put Leupold on the map as a leader in the riflescope industry. This new technology was an instant success and Leupold immediately saw a major increase in sales. Based on the success of their riflescope line, Leupold decided to go further into the sports optics market. Over the next 10 years, they introduced new optical products like binoculars and spotting scopes, as well as a number of scopes designed for specialized uses. Currently Leupold has established itself as a leader in the sports optics industry. They dominate some specialized markets such as law enforcement and long range shooting. Many rifle scope manufacturers utilize parts that are produced and imported from all over the world. Leupold, however, is one of the few U.S. based optical companies that only uses parts and manufacturing from the United States. This means that all Leupold scopes are actually "made in the USA". Leupold also has one of the strongest warranty's in the business. All their scopes come with a lifetime guarantee. If the scope that you have breaks and they can't fix it, you get a brand new at no charge. I had a Leupold Golden Ring spotting scope that started having problems as soon I purchased it. It went back to Leupold one time under the lifetime warranty. A Leupold rep called and said that they couldn't fix it to their satisfaction so they sent me a brand new replacement. I personally own 3 Leupold scopes in various configurations and I would buy each of them all over again in a minute. Leupold scopes aren't inexpensive, but they are worth the money.
