Is Your Child Ready For Training Pants?

You have gone through literally thousands of diapers and now you feel that your child is ready for potty training. Potty training usually takes place between the ages of 1 and 3, and is typically longer than the diaper-phase period.

Should you decide that you child is ready for potty training—each child is different and only the parents can know for sure if their child is ready—training pants, or potty training pants will be what your child will be wearing through most of the phase.

Training pants, sometimes also called “pull-ups,” like diapers, come as either disposable or reusable. They are a step up from normal diapers, and a phase below the use of actual underwear. Either way, the design and principle is simple—they have elastic materials on all hems (waist and legs) which trap baby “stuff” within the garment, making him or her uncomfortable and want to remove the pull-ups.

The principle mentioned above can be the main key in deciding if your child is ready to use training pants. Do you think your child can pull down his own pants on his own? Remember, a diaper is made as such so it does not remove as easy, keeping you and your baby’s surroundings neat and clean. Do you think your child is curious enough to notice that he or she has been given the freedom to act for his own comfort?

Naturally, a child will eventually go through these stages and complete potty training, but deciding on the right time to change to training pants can mean well for the whole training process or just a hassle for the parents. If your child is not ready, you will waste a lot of time cleaning up messes, and using the traditional diaper is just more practical.

There is nothing wrong with prolonging the diaper-using period, because the time you spend with your child is more important than any form of “training” he or she will go through. Cleaning up after your child tests your true patience—it is a repetitive and tedious process. Anything you can do to lessen that, you should.

But once your baby goes through using training pants, you will discover (and enjoy) how he or she goes through all the motions of proper toilet rituals. You will eventually use other tools and essential like potties and potty training urinals to aid the training process, and before you know it, he or she is already doing the “deed” in the grown-up toilet.
