Is A Computer Forensics Degree Right For You?

One of the fastest growing and most exciting fields today is in computer forensics. With the rise in computer related crimes and the spread of technology, this field has quite a bit of growth potential. The potential for jobs that pay well is often enough to entice people to enter the field, but you have to make sure that it’s something you truly love before you get started. You don’t want to enter any career if you aren’t going to enjoy the job. If you do, you will find that the passion soon wanes, and you aren’t happy even though you might be making good money.

To determine if you are a good candidate to receive a computer forensics degree, you should be able to answer the following. Do you have a passion for technology? Technology changes rapidly, and you have to be willing to keep up with all of these changes and know how they will affect the public and private companies, as well as government agencies. For example, the advent of smart phones changed quite a few things when it comes to computer forensics. Today, you have to be able to track hacks into smart phones, delve into the phones to find hidden information and deleted texts in the case of criminals, and more. With each new device that comes out, you will need to learn more.

In addition, you have to love the act of finding evidence and sifting through mountains of data just to find one thing that you can use. It takes dedication and determination to work in the field, and you have to love problem solving. You will also have to understand and learn chain of evidence rules so that the information you find and the devices you use are admissible in court.

While getting a computer forensics degree and working for a company or law enforcement might seem like a job for someone who works solo, you still have to have good interpersonal skills. You will have to interact with others on your team, others in the organization, and you may even have to testify as an expert witness in a trial. Being comfortable in those types of situations is important, and you have to think about all of these things when you are considering schooling.

If you do enjoy all of the above, and you want to have a challenging career that can make a difference, then you should seriously consider getting a computer forensics degree.
