Is It Possible To Learn French In 3 Months ?

I've learned French and Spanish over the years and in both cases it has taken me well over 3 months to learn the language to any degree approaching fluency so my experience would suggest that it is not possible to learn French in 3 months. Having said this, a friend of mine took an intensive French course in France for 3 months and then obtained a job in France. I believe that he still found it tough to integrate into the French working environment but it seems that his 3 months had been very productive. So what is the difference between someone that learns French in 3 months and the rest of us that seem to struggle for years, seemly taking one step forward and then two steps back in our French studies ?

In my mind there are two factors that influence our ability to learn French. These are your aptitude for learning languages and your motivation to learn the language.

Maybe you have heard the story of Daniel Tammet, as featured in a documentary a few years ago about autism. He has an incredible ability to work with numbers and pick up languages. At the time of the documentary it was claimed that he spoke 10 languages.

To grasp his ability to learn languages, the documentary team set him a challenge to learn Icelandic, (which it claimed is one of the hardest languages to learn) from scratch, in one week. He would demonstrate his progress by taking part in an Icelandic TV chat show. At the end of the week, he appeared on the TV show and although at first hesitant he began conversing with the interviewer. The interviewer was amazed that he had no knowledge of Icelandic at the beginning of the week.

Clearly, Daniel Tammet has an aptitude or ability for languages that towers over the abilities of average people but it seems that learning a language in a week is possible for this man. This example illustrates that your ability to learn languages will effect the length of time it takes to become fluent.

So how do you know if you have an aptitude to learn languages ? You don't really know until you try is the simple answer. Other than this, maybe you are particularly skilled in your mother tongue and you are noted for your ability at school or work with words or writing. Maybe you like word puzzles, crosswords and games that require finding how symbols fit together into a greater framework. In reality, other than learning a new language, it is probably hard to improve your aptitude for language learning in any other manner.

If developing an aptitude for languages is hard to do, the second influence on language learning is a lot easier to leverage. The motivation you have to learn the language is probably more important than your aptitude in many ways because it is something that you can readily change. Many people have achieved great things without having the skills, the knowledge or the god given ability to do it. They have had the desire. This will power has streamlined their actions towards achieving their desired goal.

So in learning French in 3 months you need to have a strong desire to want to learn French. In many ways this is were the average person falls short. They would like to learn it but it's not a must. It falls into the category of 'like to have' rather than 'must have' skill set for most people.

Taking control of this desire is the key to learning French quicker. You have to put yourself into positions where you need to have this skill set. The ultimate would be to go and live in a country where French is spoken but this is not always practical. After that, you need to put yourself in the position where you will need the skill as often as is possible. This means immersing yourself in the French language and culture at every possible opportunity. If you are not learning the French grammar then you should be listening to French music. If you are not listening to french music then watch a film. If you are not watching a film them go to an internet chat room and practise French writing. Immerse yourself in French until you come out the other side, a French speaking person. And don't stop until you come out the other side. You may not hit the 3 month deadline but at least you will end up speaking French.
