When a child has ADD/ADHD, it's not only the child who is affected. Every member of the family is affected in some way. It definitely is not easy to raise a child who has ADD.
You might be going through emotions that make you ask questions like: Why can't he behave? Why can't he try harder and concentrate on his schoolwork? You might be experiencing guilt about the fact that your child is suffering from ADD. You might feel that you done something wrong in your pregnancy. I can assure you that that is not the case. If your child has ADD, then look for the positive in that. He or she is very intelligent. Your child is artistically gifted. Your child is very creative and has a wonderful imagination. This causes him to be a great problem solver.
If your child is struggling at school, you might have to remember that he is taught what to learn and not how to learn. Sometimes a teacher might complain about your child’s performance. Find out what exactly the problem is before you make assumptions. Talk to your child and find out what is bothering him. Many children who have ADD can’t sit still for long. Others can sit quietly for long, but then their attention is somewhere else. They might be daydreaming. Some children cause interruptions in the classroom, which can be a problem.
You have to boost your child’s confidence by praising him. Give him small rewards for achievements. A hug, a kind word or a smile is also rewards. Sometimes it might feel like he is running the household instead of you as the parent. Tell him the rules of the house. Make it very clear to him. When you communicating to him, have eye contact. When you instruct him to do something, be sure that he knows what to do. Give him lots of confidence and make him feel special. Motivate your child to listen to you more. Listen to him when he talks to you. A child with ADD also needs attention like any other child.
Raising a child with ADD is not easy and can cause a lot of frustration. It can cause embarrassing moments. As a parent of a kid with ADD / ADHD you need all the help and support that you can get. These children’s self esteem are sometimes so low. It is your duty as parents to guide him and to make him a leader. You should make sure that he is treated with respect and he should be respectful towards you as well. You must set a good example to him.
