Ivf Failure Reasons And What To Do Next Time To Improve The Odds

Although scientific in nature, IVF itself is not an exact science and although everything can go exactly according to plan, there will never be a 100% success rate. There are many IVF failure reasons and when you think about it, when a healthy couple tries to conceive naturally, it can take upwards of 6 months before a pregnancy is achieved.

However, where IVF is concerned, the cost implications are enormous and, coupled with this is the fact that very often time is of the essence and it becomes apparent why we need to know why IVF might fail and, more importantly, what steps we might take to maximize the chances of success in the next cycle.

There are many factors which determine the success of IVF and maternal age carries the most weight. Pregnancy and subsequent live birth rates decline sharply as a mother's age increases and the reduction in egg quality is largely responsible. There are a number of other IVF failure reasons and the most common ones are listed below.

* Ovaries failing to respond to the fertility drugs can mean that multiple follicles are not available for collection. Less commonly, ovulation could occur before the collection date which means that the procedure cannot continue as the eggs must be harvested from the ovaries.

* Sperm quality poor or quantity insufficient

* Implantation failure can happen when the embryo does not attach itself to the uterine wall. Very often there are no answers as to why this has happened but it could be due to the embryo not being capable of further development or, more rarely, a problem with the uterus itself.

* The skills and competancy of the clinic can have a significant bearing on the outcome of the procedure.

It is always vital that you discuss the IVF failure reasons with your clinic to see if any amendments need to be made to your protocol. Sometimes, simple measures can be all that is needed to guarantee success next time, but very often there is nothing obviously wrong and when repeated, success may well be achieved next time.

Even if there are no obvious reasons why the process failed, taking steps to improve aspects of your diet and lifestyle whilst preparing for your next cycle will be beneficial. If you haven't done so already, both you and your partner should speak to your doctor about taking pre-natal supplements. There are many proprietary products available which contain some of the micronutrients which are believed to help before and during pregnancy.

In terms of your diet, there is much which can be done. You should ensure that you eat organic foods and avoid those containing preservatives, pesticides and those containing high levels of sugars and trans fats. Drink plenty of filtered water and concentrate on eating fertility boosting foods such as full fat dairy, brightly colored fruits and vegetables, lean organic proteins and beans, nuts and seeds.

Both parties should concentrate on stopping harmful practices such as smoking, drinking alcohol and taking non-prescription drugs goes without saying as these could be IVF failure reasons.
