Jbl 4406 Review

If you are thinking of setting up a home recording studio consider yourself lucky. What do I mean by that? Well, it wasn't long ago that if you wanted to record in a real studio you had to go to New York or Los Angeles and even Memphis if you were doing the country thing. I'm speaking to our younger recording musicians as the older ones like myself already know and lived through this. Back in the eighties it was damn near impossible to set up a legit recording studio at home.

Sure you could have a four track or eight track recorder and have some fun with it but the result was anything but professional sounding recordings. Back in the day it would have cost you thousands and thousands of dollars to build a home studio that was worth anything and who had the money for that? Not me that is for sure. So the big recording companies ruled the world back those not so good old days. Now though it's a different story altogether as home recording equipment is much more affordable, actually incredibly so.

I'm amazed at how my students (I'm a guitar teacher too) all have great home recording equipment. They bring in these cd's they recorded at home for me to listen to and I'm always amazed at how spoiled these youngsters are! You can actually create a home recording that easily holds up next to the big names these days which is why the recording industry is suffering at the corporate level. The explosion of affordable home recording equipment has made the indie scene larger than life and that is oh so good!

One thing you young guys lack (not all of you but probably most of you) is a developed ear for studio sound and monitors. It takes time and experience to develop a sharp ear or to be able to tell if a monitor is flat or not responding perfectly. I have had great results with the JBL 4406 studio monitor as well as other JBL monitors that I work with. The jbl 4406 is a small compact studio monitor perfect for recording in small places which is what we often find ourselves in when we do a home recording project.

The JBL 4406 has a baffle control in the front which helps with adjusting the level of the transducers to match the specific requirement. Everyone was surprised at how such a small monitor kicked out such huge sound with no distortion and incredible response. You learn how to listen for these things over the years I suppose. Like most JBL monitors the 4406 has those titanium domes that give you that super clear high frequency response that many find so elusive in live recording situations. Again, like most jbl monitors the 4406 is easy to control and allows easy manipulation of the frequency levels so I can get the exact performance I desire.

The frequency range is -6db tp 45Hz-27kHz and has a power rating of 7 watts. Very modest indeed but very good quality at the same time. Again I recommend the jbl 4406 if you are recording in a small place that doesn't afford much room. It's a perfect addition to the typical home recording studio and wont break you wallet either. So from the older guy to the younger guys this is my two cents for what it's worth.
