Jagged Edge Mixtapes -the Early Years
The first Jagged Edge mixtapes featured twin brothers Brian and Brandon Casey on lead vocals along with singers Kyle Norman and Richard Wingo. When they added Xscape singer Kandi Burruss, things really started to take off for the group. Kandi introduced them to Jermaine Dupri, who would sign them to his label, So So Def Records, and eventually lead them to Columbia Records. In 1998, after several Jagged Edge mixtapes, the group released the single “The Way That You Talk,” which was an instant hit. It was the lead single on their debut album, A Jagged Era, which hit the stores in 1998. Combined with their second single, “I Gotta Be,” the album got significant radio play and eventually went gold. In 2000, the group released the album J.E. Heartbreak, which included many popular hip hop songs. The most popular single off of the album was the radio hit “Let’s Get Married.” However, the lead album, “Keys To The Range,” was a flop and hardly got any play at all on radio stations, leaving the group uncertain about their future. They went to work on another album and hoped that it would be more successful than the last. In 2001, the group released yet another album, this one entitled Jagged Little Thrill. Two of the single, “Goodbye” and “I Got It 2,” went the same way as “Keys To The Range” and things were beginning to look grim. However, the single “Where The Party At” became a smash hit and the album eventually achieved sales that reached platinum status. Jagged Edge mixtapes helped the group to define their sound and make connections with people who could greatly influence their careers. Although not all of their singles were smash hits, the ones that did get radio play were very popular and helped the band to make a name for themselves in the industry. Like many other popular hip hop acts, they quickly learned that they would have to get through the low times in order to enjoy the benefits of eventually becoming a successful act.
