Japanese Language Learning Tips - Getting Started

Have you been thinking about learning Japanese but are intimidated by the difficulty of learning the language? Are you ready to study but not sure how to get started? Here are a few quick Japanese language learning tips to get your study of the Japanese language off to the right start.

1. Assess Your Japanese Language Goals

Even before you begin studying Japanese, you need to assess your language learning goals. Do you ultimately want to become highly fluent and literate in the language and use it in some work capacity? Or do you simply want to develop some basic conversation skills so that you can travel to and get around in Japan and converse in Japanese with your Japanese friends? Along with an assessment of your goals, be realistic about how much time you will have to study. You don't want to be overly ambitious if you only have a couple hours a week to devote to language study.

2. Choose the Right Japanese Study Course or Material

Choosing a Japanese course or study material that matches your learning goals can make the difference between fueling your enthusiasm to keep learning, or quitting in boredom and frustration. So what should you be looking for?

If you are serious about learning Japanese, ultimately you will need some quality instruction in a structured classroom environment, so you will want to do some research and find out where the best language programs are in your area. Look into local college Japanese programs and talk to the students to find out what they think of their learning experience and the quality of the classroom instruction.

If you are not in a position to enroll in a class, consider getting started with some self-study Japanese language learning tools. Actually, a beginning self-study course can be a great option even if you are thinking about enrolling in a class but are not quite ready to make that commitment just yet.

There are many great online Japanese courses available on the Internet, many of which are the fraction of the cost of a college course but still provide great instruction. A self-study program also allows you to study at your own pace, get your feet wet, and decide whether Japanese language learning is something you really want to pursue without making a significant financial investment up front.

3. Be Patient With Your Language Learning Progress

Many people start out their Japanese language learning with great enthusiasm, only to get a harsh reality check once the going gets tough, which it will. Therefore, it is essential to realize from the outset that learning Japanese is truly a marathon, not a sprint.

In fact, learning any foreign language is a lifelong process, because there is ALWAYS something more to learn. So with that in mind, adopt the attitude of the tortoise for your Japanese language learning journey and realize that slow and steady really does win the race!
