Juicing Information To Help You Get Started

The history of juicing can probably be traced back to the 1920's when research into the nutrients contained in foods was being determined, especially the value of raw foods. It was found that the juice of the fruit or vegetable actually held all the vitamin and mineral content. The pulp of the produce was also important for its fiber value to add bulk to our diets, but the nutrients were in the juice.

Juicers were first used commercially, being large and cumbersome. As need developed and a market began to develop, smaller household size juicing machines began to be manufactured. They were of the twin gear, augur and centrifugal type. Juicing didn't really become popular until the late 1960's and the 1970's.

The first issue we need to address is why not just use your blender to make the juices. Blenders and juicers each perform different functions. The blender will do as its name suggests, blend everything into a scurry. It's fine for smoothies but not for juicing. Unless you want to go the extra step of squeezing everything out through a fine sieve a couple of times to extract just the juice. A juicer, however, will extract the juices from the fibrous pulp.

When selecting a juicer you need to select one that has a stainless steel interior for ease of cleaning, durable and non reacting to acidic produce like citrus. If your juicer is easy to use and easy to clean you will be inclined to use it more frequently.

The horsepower rating of the motor is another important consideration. It should be at mimimum at least one third horsepower, but one half horsepower if you can afford would be better. If the horsepower rating is less than that, the juicing machine will have to work harder, running at full power every time, which will lead to premature wearing out of the motor. It will also operate at a higher decibel rating, meaning just plain noisier.

There will also be an rpm or revolutions per minute rating on the label. This is usually the rating that is determined when the machine is running idle, without any fruits or vegetables in the compartment. When the produce is added the rpm will drop, therefore it is important to also check the blade speed rating of the juicer as well. You want one that will maintain an even blade speed during the juicing phase. The electronic circuitry in most top of the line models will do this.

Just one more bit of information about juicing. If you are new to juicing and consuming vegetables as well, then go easy at it at first, until you get use to it. Drinking too much at once can cause some intestinal upset when taking the vegetable juices. Just start with them in small amounts, an ounce or two. The fruit juices are easier on the gastro-intestinal tract and taste a lot better. So you may want to start with there, adding a little vegetable juice to them and working your way up.
