Keep It Tidy With Storage Units

Moving house is said to be one of the most stressful things you can ever do. It is usually considered that this relates to sorting out all the legal documentation which can take ages and rarely goes smoothly.

However, this is only the beginning of any trouble. There is a much bigger problem lurking underneath which can cause even more stress. This is the sorting and packing of your belongings. For those people who, for whatever reason, move frequently, this can be less of a problem as they will not have had time to accumulate 'stuff'. However those who have lived somewhere for a considerable time will, over the years, have accumulated a considerable amount. There is no doubt that you will have a collection of tools, ornaments, CDs and DVDs as well as other things such as clothes, crockery and pots and pans.
Some removal companies provide a selection of cardboard boxes into which this can be packed, but their quality is not guaranteed, and they may not be up to the job at hand. However this is usually only a few weeks prior to the move. It is much better if the packing starts long before this date. In fact a good time to start is when the house is being prepared to go on the market.

All prospective buyers want to come to a house and be able to see themselves in it. The owner therefore has to take themselves out of the picture to let the prospective buyer get a clear view. The best way to do this is to de-clutter.

Start by going through each room and throwing out everything you are not going to need in your new home. Be ruthless - that half sheet of plywood that could be so useful has not been used at all, so get rid of it. There may be old CDs of DVDs that you no longer watch which you can donate to a charity shop. Get you stuff down to a reasonable amount, then buy some storage units and pack it away. This is not the everyday stuff you regularly need that will go into the cardboard boxes when they come; this is the stuff you rarely touch but really don't want to get rid of. Once packed away in some storage units, stack them neatly out of the way, or better still find somewhere to store them like a storage locker or a friend's garage.

There are two advantages to this strategy: One, it will make your home look tidy and spacious instead of small and cramped, and therefore more attractive to the potential buyer. The second is that when you come to move, you can transport your possessions in their storage units, and be tidy and set up in your new home so much quicker.

At Wickes we offer a range of storage units that are just perfect for the job. We also have a range of shelving so that in your new home you can start by storing your stuff correctly straight away and keep it tidy.
