Is the summer heat getting the best of you? Hot, humid, hazy weather during the summer months make most of feel sluggish. Also, too much sun may make us dizzy or light headed. We may not like it, but this combination causes us to move slower, think slower, and even delay our reactions. Stay tuned to learn more about the possible causes and the steps we can take to prevent this constant fogginess.
Oxygen deprivation could have a lot to do with the way you’re feeling. It is after all, the leading cause of persistent fatigue. Every cell in our body needs oxygen to function properly and the brain alone uses 12% of our total oxygen intake. The main problem is that the breathing habits of most people don’t provide enough oxygen to the brain and body. So, what can be done about this?
Start by sitting and standing up straight as poor posture will only inhibit your oxygen intake. Incorporate aerobic exercise into your schedule for at least 60 minutes, 3 times a week. Also, add strength training on top of that for another 20-30 minutes, 3 times a week. Maintain a healthy diet of complex carbohydrates which includes plenty of fruits, veggies, and whole grains. A diet high in fat significantly reduces the blood’s oxygen carrying capacity. It is a good idea to eat small amounts more often and always carry a water bottle with you even if you’re not thirsty.
You can still enjoy outdoor summer activities and avoid heat exhaustion if you practice some common sense. Wear light weight, light colored clothing to keep cool and reflect the sun’s energy away from you. If you need to be outside for long amounts of time in dangerously high temperatures, be sure to wear a hat use or use an umbrella. Those hand held fans with water sprayers also work wonders whether you’re at the beach or waiting for the bus. Obviously, avoid strenuous activity if possible and limit your caffeine and alcohol intake which is unhealthy in large doses, anyway. Make the most of your summer months!
