Keeping Chickens As Pets

Many people enjoy keeping chickens or other birds as pets, but there is a lot of work and equipment that goes into keeping them happy and healthy. If you and your family would like to buy chickens for your back yard, you should keep several things in mind. It can be an expensive endeavor, but it is certainly worth it in the end.

First of all, you will need to consider the amount of room that you have for your birds. Just a few birds will not need a lot of room, but they do like to have an area for running and playing. If you live in the city with a small yard, you should keep the number of chickens you own to a minimum so that they all have room to thrive. Keep in mind that predators will be on the lookout for your birds, too, so you should have somewhere safe for them at all times. Even the neighbor’s dog is a danger to your new pet, so keep your birds caged or behind nets whenever you are not around.

Chicken coops can offer a lot of the features that your birds will need. Many coop builders provide chicken coops that have already been built and just require assembly once you get it to your home. These coops will have the netting and secure doors to keep your chickens safe, so that can take one worry away from you. Some coops even have built-in chicken runs where your birds can play without fearing danger. The chicken runs are enclosed in mesh or netting, so larger predators will not be able to get to them while they are outside. The coops also give a tidy look to your back yard, which can certainly be nicer than trying to build your own or allowing your birds to run free when not in cages.

You will also need to consider feeding your birds without allowing other animals to get to the food. Rodents and insects will infest your bird feed quickly if you don’t take precautions. Feeders are available from suppliers, and this will help you to feed your birds whenever necessary while also keeping other animals out. These feeders have features that keep water from getting in and destroying the food, too. It is also important when you are planning to keep these birds as pets, so you need to consider every piece of equipment carefully before deciding.
