Keeping Fit While On Vacation

For many health-conscious travelers, fitness routines are part of their daily lives. Workouts do not cease to end simply because a person is on vacation. Fortunately, Mexico offers a variety of both inside and outside activities designed to keep fitness enthusiasts’ plans uninterrupted. Thanks to the country’s diverse landscape, venturing out beyond the hotel’s fitness center allows travelers to stay active while seeing Mexico’s natural and historical sites.

Hiking the numerous rainforests of the Yucatan Peninsula provides visitors with an opportunity to traverse steep hillsides, cross rocky streams and choose routes based on preferred comfort levels and desired intensities. Other intensive hikes in this region include visiting the Chichen Itza and Coba Ruins.

Chichen Itza offers expansive grounds and climbable ruins with many stairs and challenging inclines. For a stronger workout, Coba’s climbable monuments reach over ten stories tall. The site is so difficult, a rope spans from the top of the pyramid to its bottom. To supplement to these climbs, added fitness training can be included by renting an on-site bicycle.

If vacationing at a beachside location, in addition to running on Mexico’s white-sand beaches, swimming, surfing and other aquatic activities are available. From a game of beachside volleyball to a self-guided outing in a rented sea kayak, there is some type of fitness activity for everyone. When planning for a beachside fitness activity, particularly during the months of May through November, due to tropical conditions and turtle nesting season, some areas of the beach may be closed. Should this happen and outdoor conditions are favorable, consider running up and down your hotel’s outdoor stairs, jogging around the boardwalk or creating your own outdoor cardio workout.

When weather conditions become unfavorable or if desiring an indoor workout, consider visiting your hotel’s gym. Most hotels include an on-site fitness center or have a partnership with a nearby gym. Admission is free and is included in your hotel’s daily resort fee. In addition to gym admission, upscale hotels also include bottled water and discounts on related fitness massage and sauna treatments. While prices are comparable to what American masseuses charge, having a sports’ massage may be desirable; especially if planning multiple fitness activities.

No matter what type of fitness routine chosen, there is always an activity to keep a fit traveler moving while enjoying all your Mexico vacation has to offer.
